The recently released “CBGB” movie has unfortunately been poorly reviewed. While it was initially exciting that this very influential time in music history would be brought to the silver screen, the results are poor.

The main complaints seem to revolve around how sanitized the movie is, capturing none of the anger and excitement of the era. One of the greatest punk rock bands of all time, The Ramones, are portrayed as goofballs, with none of the charisma and brilliance that made them the musical giants they are today. Perhaps this is due to The Ramones not allowing their music to be used on the soundtrack.

Then the portrayal of such music icons like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and Blondie was akin to watching actors put on Halloween costumes, reduced to caricatures. The movie is considered a watered down portrayal of CBGB, and is missing the soul of that era.
